🎛️ Integrated Circuits (Integrated Circuits - ICs)

Modern solid-state elements are made on thin wafers of silicon (Silicon Wafers) using photolithography technology (Photolithography).

The fundamental difference between discrete components and integrated circuits lies in the packaging method; when manufacturing discrete components (Discreet Devices), thousands of pieces (such as individual transistors or diodes) are built on a silicon wafer, and then each piece is cut and packaged separately. In an integrated circuit (IC), a complete electrical circuit is built that contains interconnected transistors, diodes, and resistors printed together on the same wafer before being cut and packaged as a single block.

In the early days, ICs contained a few simple transistors, but today, some advanced integrated circuits (such as processors) contain more than a billion transistors مدمج فوق "شريحة" (Chip) سيليكونية واحدة متناهية الصغر.

1. Manufacturing constraints: The dilemma of inductors and capacitors in ICs

Integrated circuits face a strict physical constraint when it comes to inductors and capacitors:

  • Only capacitors and coils with microscopic and infinitesimal values (Tiny Values) can be built within the available space on the silicon chip.
  • Engineering solution: If an integrated circuit requires capacitors or inductors with high filtering or resonant values, they must be connected as discrete components outside the IC body. Many analog ICs also require precise external resistors to determine the circuit's gain and adjust its operating frequencies.

2. Integrated circuit casings and pinout identification

Integrated circuits are packaged in various forms to suit soldering methods and applications:

  1. The Dual-Inline Package (DIP): This is the most common laboratory package, rectangular in shape, with two parallel rows of connector pins on either side. The standard spacing between pins is 1/10 of an inch, and the spacing between rows is 3/10 of an inch.
  2. Cylindrical casing (TO-5): It has the same size and shape as the metal TO-5 transistor casing but comes with a larger number of pins (typically 8 pins).
  3. Surface Mount Package (SMD): This is the standard package in mass production lines and modern factories due to its small size, where the pins are soldered directly over the copper tracks of the board without the need to drill them.

📐    Rules for reading pin numbers (Pin Numbering):

The pin numbers are always read counter-clockwise when looking at the IC from above:

  • في غلاف DIP: يتم تحديد Pin number 1 by the presence of a "dimple" (Dot), or a "semi-circular notch" (Notch) at the edge of the package, where pin number 1 is always to the left of the notch.
  • In a TO-5 package: pin number 1 is defined by a protrusion or metal tab (Tab) on the bottom edge of the case.

3. IC Types & Logic Families

Integrated circuits are divided into two main categories:

  • Analog ICs: and include a wide range such as operational amplifiers (Op-Amps), voltage regulators, oscillators, and audio decoders.
  • Digital ICs: deal with digital logic. Although it is commonly said that they operate in the language of 1s and 0s, they actually deal with two levels of electrical voltage (for example, $5\text{ V}$ and $0\text{ V}$), and the symbols 1 and 0 are used mathematically to represent these two states (High / Low).

Digital circuits are divided into logic families, the most prominent of which are:

A. Transistor-Transistor Logic (TTL) family

TTL circuits are made entirely using bipolar junction transistors (BJTs). Their logic gates are characterized internally by having transistors with multiple emitters. (Multiple Emitters) on a single chip.Advantages and disadvantages: They are known for their very high speed in processing data, but they are criticized for their high power consumption (poor energy efficiency).

  • Brand name: تتميز بسرعتها العالية جداً في معالجة البيانات، ولكن يعيبها استهلاكها المرتفع للطاقة (ضعف كفاءة الطاقة).
  • التسمية التجارية: The numbers of this family start with the number 74 for commercial parts and 54 for military parts (for example: the chip 7404 which internally contains 6 logic Inverters).

TTL Voltage Levels (Logic Levels):

The TTL family always operates strictly at a fixed supply voltage of $5\text{ V}$:

  • Logic 1 (Logical High): is represented by a voltage of $5\text{ V}$.
  • Logic 0 (Logical Low): is represented by a voltage of $0\text{ V}$ (ground).

B. Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) family.

CMOS circuits are made using MOSFET transistors. Each logic gate within it relies on the arrangement of complementary pairs that combine a $P-Channel$ transistor and an $N-Channel$ transistor together.ترانزستورات الـ MOSFET. وتعتمد كل بوابة منطقية داخلها على تركيب أزواج متتمة (Complementary Pairs) تجمع بين ترانزستور $P-Channel$ وترانزستور $N-Channel$ معاً.

Operation mechanism of the fast CMOS inverter:

When applying Logic 1 (positive voltage) to the common input of the two gates:

  • the lower transistor ($N-Channel$) turns on and becomes in a conducting state, while the upper transistor ($P-Channel$) turns off and becomes an insulator.
  • The result: the output is directly connected to ground (Ground), making the output Logic 0. (The opposite occurs when Logic 0 is input; the upper turns on and the lower turns off, connecting the output to the supply voltage $V_{CC}$).
  • Advantages and disadvantages: CMOS circuits are characterized by Very low and almost negligible power consumption in a stable state, but it has historically been slower than TTL (although recent developments have made its speeds exceptional and competitive today).
  • Brand name: The numbers of this family start with the number 40 (like the chip 4049 which contains 6 inverters).

⚠️ Impedance Matching Alert: Due to the high input impedance of CMOS, the output of a standard CMOS circuit cannot drive a TTL family circuit directly, nor can it drive low-impedance loads like LEDs. If you try to connect a CMOS output to a TTL input, the signal will collapse due to impedance mismatch. To solve this problem, companies have designed special CMOS circuits that act as intermediary buffers like the chip 4049 or 4050, which are specifically designed to lower output impedance and enable CMOS to drive TTL or LEDs efficiently. There is also a hybrid family called 74C (like 74C04) which are CMOS parts engineered to be direct and fully compatible replacements for the pins and voltages of the TTL family.

CMOS Voltage Levels:

CMOS is characterized by high flexibility; it can operate over a wide supply voltage range from 3 to 12 volts:

  • Logic 0: is always represented by $0\text{ V}$.
  • Logic 1: is represented by the actual applied supply voltage. (If we power the chip with $9\text{ V}$, then logic 1 equals $9\text{ V}$, and if we power it with $12\text{ V}$, then logic 1 equals $12\text{ V}$).
  • Critical note: In case of using an intermediate buffer chip (like 4049) to connect the CMOS to the TTL, the supply voltage for all circuits must definitely be unified at $5\text{ V}$ explicit.

4. Field testing and maintenance of integrated circuits (Troubleshooting)

The entry of components into a monolithic package does not change their operating physics; the transistor remains a transistor and the diode remains a diode. The skill of maintenance lies in determining which pin connects to which part of the circuit based on the datasheet.

🩺 IC behavior upon failure:

When the integrated circuit experiences a fault or internal burning due to a voltage spike or excessive heat, it often shows one of two conditions on its pins:

  1. Explicit short circuit (Short Circuit): A direct short between the power pin or signal pins and the ground pin, accompanied by excessive heat to the IC body as soon as power is applied.
  2. Open circuit (Open Circuit): An internal break in the microscopic connection paths of the IC, causing the pin to lose its response and the signals to appear as if they are completely isolated.

🛠️ Workshop fact: Integrated circuits are solid blocks chemically integrated, and there is absolutely no way to repair them internally. When the IC is confirmed to be damaged, the only solution is to carefully remove it using desoldering tools and replace it with a completely new piece bearing the same part number.
