To summarize this unit, we saw the main components of the electric vehicle and understood the important roles played by the traction battery, the electric motor, and the power electronics. The size of the battery in kilowatt-hours and the energy consumption of the vehicle play a key role in determining the available range that one can drive. The energy consumption of the vehicle is affected by several factors such as weather conditions, battery degradation, driving style, and the energy consumed by the vehicle's accessories.

Operating the electric vehicle itself is very simple : the motor uses the power output from the battery to drive, and the power electronics help control the flow of energy. The electric motor, along with the motor drive, has a key advantage of providing nearly full torque at all speeds; thus, electric vehicles do not have gears and have simpler transmission systems. Cooling the traction batteries has become a common practice to extend battery life. A deeper look at the operation of the electric vehicle and the individual components is covered in the MOOC on Electric Vehicles: Technology.

There are different types of electric vehicles, although the term "electric vehicles" usually refers to battery electric/all electric vehicles/plug-in electric vehicles. Types of electric vehicles include hybrid electric vehicles (series, parallel, series-parallel type), plug-in hybrid vehicles, battery electric vehicles, and fuel cell electric vehicles. Based on the hybridization rate , hybrid electric vehicles can be divided into small, light, and full hybrids. In the case of small and light hybrids, the electric power is not sufficient to drive the car alone. The size of the battery and the power of the electric drive system gradually increase as you move from a hybrid car to a fully electric car. Compared to battery electric vehicles, the benefit of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) is to overcome range anxiety during long-distance driving thanks to the gasoline internal combustion engine. At the same time, this is the inherent drawback: these cars are not emission-free at their exhaust pipes.

The charging infrastructure for electric vehicles will play a key role in accommodating electric vehicles in the future. An electric vehicle can be charged via alternating current (AC) charging and direct current (DC) charging. Fast charging, which exceeds 50 kilowatts, is usually done using DC charging. There are many دورًا رئيسيًا في استيعاب المركبات الكهربائية في المستقبل. هناك العديد types of  charging plugs (Type 1, 2, 3, Chademo, Combo), charging modes (modes 1, 2, 3, 4), and charging power levels (level 1, 2, 3). Type 1 chargers are mainly used in the USA/Japan for AC charging, while Type 2 chargers are mainly used in Europe for AC charging. The lithium battery charging process has two distinct charging areas, which are the direct current (CC) charging area and the constant voltage (CV) charging area. Fast charging usually occurs in the CC area. Currently, electric vehicle charging cannot be controlled and starts as soon as the electric vehicle is plugged in. Furthermore, it occurs at a constant power. Through smart charging , the charging process can be controlled in terms of time and energy based on solar energy production or energy prices, for example. Through smart charging, electric vehicle charging can be made cheaper, more efficient, and more environmentally friendly.

In the next unit , we will delve deeper into the business aspects of electric vehicles. Until then, we will leave you with these activities that will connect all the concepts you have learned in this unit. May the force (electric drive) be with you!
